6th July
We would very much like to thank everyone involved with getting us back to Lands End 6th July in the evening.
The story is that we missed our last boat back from Tresco to St Mary’s. We saw one boat go out 4pm from Old Grimsby. And went to look at the board and it said the next boat was at 4.30pm so we waited, no boat. We were having all these thoughts going through our head about where we could stay for the night, our flight from St Mary’s to Lands End was at 6pm, panic set in.
We waited again just in case, no sign of a boat to take us back, just lots of moored boats, and very few people about. Tried my Mobile, no signal to phone the Airport. What about the other bay New Grimsby, we thought lets go to that one, so we quickly ran round to the bay and saw a boat come in, my husband dashed along I was totally out of breath and I caught up with him, he spoke to a man who said that we had just missed the boat back to St Mary’s panic set in again. It was not the end of the world we thought, a beautifully Island the sun was scorching hot a romantic notion of staying on the Island for the night did not seem so bad after all, I had resigned myself to the fact that we were going to stay the night, then my husband Michael said to the skipper of the boat that had just come in, where are you off to, Bryher replied the man.
My husband said to me what about Bryher do you want to go there?. NO I replied we do not want to go there. The Skipper said to us where do you need to go then, we said Saint Mary’s, I will radio for a charter boat If one is available but it will cost, we did not care as long as we could get back, it was gone 5pm by now.
Not knowing whether he could get a boat for us we passed up and down the harbour wall and then we sat In the waiting room. After a while we went and waited again outside. In the distance we could see a boat coming, a sense of relief came over us, it felt like a long time, busily counting our money making sure we had enough because that would have been terrible, but we did so that was O.K.
The trip on the boat was great bouncing on the waves it was like something from a James Bond movie. We arrived and thanked the Bryher boat man. Will we catch our plane, it was past 5.30pm we ran round the town, we could not find a Taxi so my husband asked this man in a car if there were any Taxis around, hop in he said to us I will take you to the airport you should be able to get your flight.
It was now getting very late, we were dropped off and really did expect to get our flight, it was 5.50pm and the Reception staff said that they tried to get in touch with us and our plane had taken off 10 mins early, they said we would have to get on the next plane to Newquay that was only if they had room.
Luckily they did, but the Pilot very kindly agreed to make a detour to Lands End then go onto Newquay. After the days events it was lovely to get back to our holiday cottage at Lamorna.
So we would like to say a big thank you to the Bryher skippers, the man with the white car who gave us a lift, Skybus, the staff at St Mary’s Airport and Lands End Airport and the Pilot of the Skybus plane flying to Newquay and of course the passengers who arrived later than expected.

25th Anniversary
Dear Skybus,
We flew with you from Bristol to St Mary’s last Tuesday 25th August , returning on Saturday. This 4 night break on the Scillies was to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, so of course we were intrigued that it was also the season for Skybus to celebrate 25 years of working together.
It was our first visit to IoS and we had a fantastic time , brilliantly launched and rounded off by 2 of the best flights we’ve ever had. We hope to be back as soon as we can arrange another break, and have loaded some piccies up onto facebook.
Anyway , here’s to the next 25 !

Where to begin?
Back in the mid eighties Don, my husband and I went for our first visit to Scilly. We had booked the first flight out of Exeter that morning, and as we were heading down the M4 I said to Don "Do you think they will serve breakfast on the plane?" "No", he said, "probably only a cup of tea or coffee". I knew something was different when they not only weighed our baggage, but ourselves as well. In fact in flight refreshment was the pilot turning round in his seat, passing over a paper trifle dish of boiled sweeties and saying "Take one and pass them back". Another time the cloud cover was low over Bodmin moor and Dartmoor, so the pilot told us he would go down the coast. It turned into a sightseeing tour in its own right, with him pointing out places of interest, and two or three turns around the house used for the TV series, The Camomile Lawn, so that people could get a good look.

Happy Memories
Myself, husband and mother, inlcuding her siamese cat at that time, were amoung the first passengers flying with Skybus from Land's End Airport in 1984. We even received a Christmas card! We used to drive down to Land's End from Newquay and start the holiday with an aviators breakfast in the airport cafe. We were weighed and sat according to weight in the eight seater 'Islander'. My mother and her siamese cat (in basket) sat in the rear of the plane.
My mother over the years had three siamese cats named Nicky, Pussy Willow and Samson (after the island). 'Nadine', the french girl who worked in the Travel Centre in Penzance, would refer to Pussy Willow as 'VIP' : VERY IMPORTANT PUSS. Unfortunately Pussy Willow passed away several years ago, and her ashes, together with the ashes of my mother, who passed away last March are scattered on Scilly.
We now usually fly from Newquay, but prefer the informality of Land's End, where the SKybus staff are always friendly, nothing too much trouble.
Up until the airport cafe changed hands on Scilly, 'Theo' used to make us a Xmas cake which would be flown on Skybus to Newquay.
Most mornings as we leave for work, we hear Skybus fly over our bungalow in Porth, on route to Scilly, and we always say the same... 'I know where I'd rather be now'.
Finally to end, we have been travelling to Scilly, at least once a year, since 1978, and last March when my mother passed away, Skybus kindly flew across the family wreath, especially made by Trenoweth flowers, in time for the funeral.
Congratulations Skybus for 25 years and best wishes for the future.

Skybus carries its first passengers
Alan Sibley, who lives on St Mary’s, was the first ticketed passenger to fly in August 1985 and bought ticket number 001.
Alan flew with his wife Margaret, sons Ian and Clive, Clive’s future wife Sarah and their dog ‘Rags’. Alan says it was a very relaxed, laid-back and enjoyable experience, “It was terribly casual and completely unregimented. In those days, it reminded me of the Flying Tigers – the pilot ambled out onto the tarmac in his leather flying jacket. It was memorable.”
He was even able to drive his car right up to the side of the plane and there was no waiting around, “It only took about 20 minutes to get the plane ready and we were able to have a look around the hangars before we boarded.”
Alan, whose family runs a number of businesses on the Scillies, flies between the mainland and St Mary’s around six times a year, “I can honestly say it’s my favourite regional airline and it’s always been a thoroughly enjoyable experience.”

SWEB
I have fond memories of the days back in 1985 when SWEB (SOUTH WESTERN ELECTRICITY BOARD) used the Skybus on a weekly basis for over eight months to transport staff and materials when mains electricity was installed on the Scillies off-islands. After us blokes and the equipment jumping on the scales and one of us being allowed to sit next to the pilot and wearing headphones on the trip was always a novelty, but I must say the Monday we flew over when the low level cloud beat us to the Scillies was quite an experience, the pilot said "look to the right and you can see round island light flashing" so we all looked and saw nothing then one of the boys said "hes over this side". One red faced pilot.

Dear Skybus
As a frequent watcher of "An Island Parish" I decided I should see what all the fuss is all about.
I was absolutely stunned, when I got to the airport. The level of customer service that I received was excellent.
When i got to your aircraft, I was surprised. It looks small, but is quite roomy, and is extremely good at STOL!
I was sat right at the front near the cockpit, and was surprised when the first officer came and gave the safety brief!
Your captain and first officer were extremely informative about the flight, and told us we would have to land at Lands end.
The captain then spoke to us after landing at St. Mary's, which is something that never happens normally with other airlines.
On the return sector, the first officer flew the sector back, which I know is common practise for the airline business. He was on the PA system telling us about the local sights, and found this highly interesting.
I was absolutely loving the personal service and the level of professionalism your crew provided.
On the return sector, I was also surprised to hear that the flight would be leaving about 25 minutes early!
We should have gone at 1645, but went at 1615, landing at newquay some 40 minutes early.
Please pass on my thanks to the crew of G-CBML, and the ground staff for making such a visit enjoyable.
I aim to go back again next year! |

Travel Sales
I just wanted to thank you for the excellent service we have received so far from your company.
I spoke to a very friendly, helpful lady on the telephone yesterday at 4.00pm and booked Skybus tickets from Lands End Airport on 02/07/08.
I was amazed when they dropped through my letter box first thing this morning!
I have checked the tickets and all three are correct, the prepaid parking ticket was enclosed as promised and the sheet with all the relevant information we need for our trip was enclosed.
It is so rare to be surprised by good service that I had to write to say a special thank you to the lady who did such a good and efficient job. I didn't take her name, but please pass on my thanks.
My family and I are so looking forward to our day trip on Skybus and we hope the excellent service continues on the day. |

Newquay to Scilly
On a quiet day in February, there was nobody in the small terminal at NQY when we arrived. We each paid our £5 airport development fee at the automated machines then went to the check-in desk which opens about an hour before scheduled departure time. All baggage has to be checked-in as the Twin Otter has no room to store it in the cabin, and this was done quickly and efficiently by the cheery agent. Security was a breeze and in under two minutes we’d completed check-in and security and were in the small departure lounge which was as deserted as the landside area. I’d noticed on the printed manifest that there were only three passengers on this flight and soon we were joined in the departure lounge by our travelling companion.
The cheery check-in agent then joined us in the departure lounge and asked us to go to the seating area where we were shown the safety briefing on video – this lasted just a couple of minutes. It was still 45 minutes before scheduled departure time but we were told that as everyone was here the Captain had decided to go! So off we went to our Twin Otter where we were greeted by the First Officer. After taking our seats (free seating on these services) he showed us how to operate the emergency exits before joining the Captain on the flight deck for their pre-flight checks. The flight deck door remained open throughout the flight so we were treated to a great view of the action at the sharp end!
Take-off was swift – we seemed to be rolling down the runway for just a few seconds before we were airborne – followed by the most thrilling flight I’ve ever experienced. The aircraft flew at just 1,500 feet along the spectacular North Cornwall coast and then onwards to St Mary’s, the largest of the islands and home to their only airport (although there is a heliport on the neighbouring island of Tresco). The approach to St Mary’s was stunning and we landed firmly on its undulating runway in a relatively strong crosswind. After engine shutdown we walked the 20 metres to the arrivals hall (a corridor!) where our bags were waiting for us. As the airport is only about a mile from the island’s capital, Hugh Town, we walked down to our hotel even though a bus was waiting for anyone who wanted it.
We spent a wonderful couple of days on St Mary’s, walking the entire coastal path (just 10 miles long) and enjoying the hospitality of the friendly locals. Alas, all too soon it was time to return to the real world.

Website Enquiries
Hello,
May I compliment you on your website (www.islesofscilly-travel.co.uk). As a past writer and editor for an award winning website I understand the mechanics of creating and maintaining a useful site. Thank you for a beautiful, informative and extremely user-friendly site!
We will be traveling to Falmouth in July and your site has encouraged me to book my family on a fly/boat day trip with additional jet boat excursion to enjoy the Scillys!
Great job! Thanks.
